Kingston

Kings County · 1.2 miles southwest of Laton · location approximate

Founded in 1856 by L. A. Whitmore, who operated first Kings River crossing. After 1858 town became stopping place for Butterfield stages. Toll bridge superseded ferry in 1873. On December 26, 1873, Tiburcio Vásquez and bandit gang made bold raid on town robbing entire village.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
