Temelec Hall

This structure was erected in 1858 by Captain Granville P. Swift, a member of the Bear Flag Party. The stone in the building was quarried here by native Indian labor. General Percifor F. Smith, U.S. military commander in California, lived in the little house nearby, in 1849.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
