Serrano Tanning Vats

Riverside County · ¼ mile east of Highway 71, 8 miles south of Corona · location approximate

These vats, in use since 1819, are located near the bed of the San Jacinto River, which ran from Lake Elsinore to Corona as late as 1880. These vats were said to be used by the Indian servants of Don Leandro Serrano for the purpose of tanning hides. They were made of rock with lime burned to a mortar, there being a single vat and a double vat.
