Fort Humboldt

Fort Humboldt was founded January, 1853 by Brevet Lieutenant Colonel R. C. Buchanan and companies B and F of the Fourth United States Infantry. Here Ulysses S. Grant was stationed from October 1853 to July 1854. This was a central base in the Indian wars of this region (1855-1865). The fort was abandoned sometime between 1867 and 1870.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
