Studebaker's Shop (Site of)

El Dorado County · 543 Main Street, Placerville · location approximate

Directions to the area ↗

This shop was built in the early 1850's. The front part was occupied by a blacksmith shop by Ollis and Hinds, and John Mohler Studebaker rented a part of the rear. Here he had a bench and sort of woodworking shop, where he repaired and worked on wagon wheels and the like. A little later he began to make wheelbarrows for the miners' use. He became engaged in the making of ammunition wagons for the Union Army; from that grew his extensive wagon and carriage business and later the automobile business.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.

Many of these plaques have since been recast or their texts revised. The California Historical Landmarks program and its current texts are maintained by the California Office of Historic Preservation. California Office of Historic Preservation ↗
