Willow Springs

Visited by Padre Garcés in 1776 while following old Horse Thief Trail, later known as Joe Walker Trail. Frémont stopped here in 1844. The famished Jayhawk party of 1850 found water here while struggling from Death Valley to Los Angeles. Still later was stage station on the Los Angeles-Havilah and Inyo Stage Lines.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
