Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of an earthwork/stone-built enclosure. The date or precise nature of the enclosure is unknown, but it is likely to be later prehistoric or medieval. The site at Nant Brook is a small sub-rectangular enclosure comprising a gently sloping interior area bounded by a low bank, c.1m in height and c.4m wide, and an outer ditch c.0.5m deep and c.5-6m wide. The site measures c.30m north-south by c.18m. On the south, a stream runs from the higher ground to the east, along the southern boundary ditch, and down to the Nant Brook on the west. The stream has doubtless been straightened and deepened in modern times, but it may follow the original drainage course of the site. There are hints of subdivisions within the interior.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of later prehistoric defensive organisation and settlement. The site forms an important element within the wider later prehistoric context and within the surrounding landscape. The site is well preserved and retains considerable archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of evidence relating to chronology, building techniques and functional detail.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
