Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
Parc Maen Llwyd standing stone measures 2.5m tall, 1.4m wide and 0.7m deep. It is oriented ENE-WSW and located on a flat ridge top overlooking a series of springs to the NE. The stone has some fissures on its faces and a bluntly rounded top.
The standing stone is thought to be of religious or ceremonial significance and to date to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 BC - 800 BC). This example is an important local landmark, being one of a number in the local vicinity. It is also notable for its shear size. The monument is likely to retain significant archaeological deposits and enhance our knowledge of prehistoric ritual practices.
The area to be scheduled comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is circular and measures 2m in diameter, except on the E side where it abuts (and does not extend into) the fence line marking the property boundary.
