Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The monument comprises the remains of three standing stones, which probably date to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 - 800 BC). The south east stone measures 2m high and 0.7m by 0.5 at the base. The south west stone situated c 400m to the east north east measures 2.2m high and 1.8m by 0.7m at the base, another stone stood c. 7m to the south west in 1875 making this a stone pair, it had been destroyed by 1925. The third northern stone is situated c 200m north north east of the latter and measures 2m in height, 1.1m in breadth and 0.6m in depth, this also was also formerly a stone pair, the companion stone last recorded as present in 1925.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. It is an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retains significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of intact burial or ritual deposits, together with environmental and structural evidence. The close proximity of the stones and the former existence of a least two others increases their group value.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
