Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The monument comprises the remains of a stone-built enclosure, which probably dates to the Iron Age period (c. 800 BC - AD 74, the Roman conquest of Wales). It is set on a crag on the northern slope of Mynydd Carn Ingli where it is overlooked slightly by higher ground to the south east. Enclosing a sub-rectangular area of c. 90m north to south by and 50m east to west is a rampart consisting of a collapsed dry-stone wall. This survives up to 3m high where best preserved on the north and incorporating three rocky outcrops in its circuit. There are two gaps, one to the south and one to the west which probably locate the original entrances; a stone-lined track-way approaches the southern one. A number of dry-stone circular huts are visible along the inner line of the rampart.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of later prehistoric defensive organisation and settlement. The site forms an important element within the wider later prehistoric context and within the surrounding landscape. The site is well preserved and retains considerable archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of evidence relating to chronology, building techniques and functional detail.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
