Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument consists of the remains of a civil settlement, or canabae, of Roman date on the E side of Isca. The E canabae is known from excavations on the site of the former Ambulance Headquarters immediately outside the E gate of the fortress. Excavations in advance of housing construction revealed substantial, high status, buildings of late Roman date, overlying extensive earlier deposits.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of Roman urban settlement organisation. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
