Summary description and reason for designation
The monument consists of the remains of a dyke, a defensive boundary or earthwork, probably dating to the early medieval period. Ty-Newydd Dyke is 0.83km long, aligned east-west across a stretch of lower ground between the hills known as Allt Tair Ffynnon and Garth. It faces north towards the Tanat Valley. A bank with a ditch to the north are clearly visible, with, in places sections of scarp.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of later prehistoric/medieval defensive organisation and settlement. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. A dyke may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
