Summary description and reason for designation

The monument comprises the well-preserved remains of a settlement consisting of three contiguous house platforms cut into a SW facing slope to the north of the Clochnant stream. The site probably dates from the Iron Age or Romano-British period (c. 800 BC - AD 400) and consists of two conjoined circular houses with a third sub-rectangular structure to their north, with a series of stone banks surrounding the houses. The largest house
is 19m in diameter, the smaller one to its south is 15m in diameter, both comprising circular stone banks with level interiors. The sub-rectangular structure immediately to their north is 20m long. They lie on enclosed
unimproved moorland.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric settlement practices. It is an important relic of the prehistoric landscape and retains significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of environmental and structural evidence, including preserved internal and external floor levels. The settlement forms part of a wider prehistoric landscape in Y Berwyn which increases its significance further.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
