Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.

This is a fine example of a settlement of the Iron Age or Romano-British period, protected by two concentric circular banks or walls. The inner bank survives below a modern field wall which encloses the interior. The outer bank has been substantially removed but is still clearly recognisable around the W half as a small but pronounced scarp about 8 m out from the base of the inner bank. The line is also marked by a series of large boulders. Around the W side there is also a scarp which may reflect the line of the outer bank, but it is closer to the inner bank. The entrance might have been at the ENE and a roundhouse may originally have stood in the interior of the settlement, but no trace of it is visible now.

A small recent structure stands between the outer and the inner bank on the S side and this has caused some disturbance. No trace of the outer bank survives in the field to the NNW.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric settlement. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structures themselves may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
