Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument consists of the remains of a dyke, a defensive boundary or earthwork dating to the prehistoric or medieval period. It consists of a c. 200m length of bank and ditch running north-north-west to south-south-east between the Ogmore and Ewenni rivers. The bank has been ploughed down and is best preserved at the northern end where it is approximately 8m wide and 1m high. A modern field boundary on the west edge of the ditch may represent the location of a former counterscarp.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of later prehistoric/medieval defensive organization and settlement. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong possibility of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. A dyke may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can be further enhanced by group value.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them which related evidence may be expected to survive.
