Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow (2400-700 BC). It is located on level ground near the coast at 50m above sea level. The mound, originally circular, is steep-sided and approximately 9m in diameter and 1.8m high and covers a burial. Excavation on the northern side showed it to be composed of limestone rubble and earth. It is encircled by a deep but rather irregular ditch. How much of this is original is difficult to tell; on the west and south it appears to be the result of modern quarrying, but on the east and north is of regular outline and about 4.6m wide. On the east it is only faint but on the north reaches 0.9m in depth.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. The round barrow is an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape. It retains significant archaeological potential and there is a strong probability of the presence of burial, ritual or structural evidence.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
