Cadw's description

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The monument comprises the remains of a church, probably dating to the medieval period. The foundations of the church are associated with the deserted village of Highlight, and stand on a low ridge overlooking a valley to the north and south. The walls are of coursed lias limestone blocks and were excavated in 1964-65. The nave measures 7.5m by 5m and the walls stand to a height of 0.3m and have been consolidated. At the eastern end is a small rectangular chancel measuring 5m by 3.5m with an entrance to the nave 1.5m wide. The walls here stand up to a height of 0.8m. It is believed to have been abandoned c. 1570.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of medieval ecclesiastical organisation. The monument forms an important element within the wider medieval context and the structure itself may be expected to contain archaeological information in regard to chronology, building techniques and functional detail.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
