Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument consists of the remains of two platform houses probably dating to the medieval period. A platform house is a levelled area of ground on which a house is built. The platforms are orientated north-west to south-east and lie just below the crest of the hill. Item A measures 17.7m by c. 8.5m wide; its hood and terrace are 0.90m high. Signs of the house are confined to the upper end where parts of the end wall remain at the base of the hood indicating a wall c. 1m thick faced on both sides by upright slabs. Item B measures 10m long by 5m wide. There are no visible wall foundations.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of settlement organisation. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structure itself may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques. a platform house may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
