Summary description and reason for designation

The monument comprises the remains of an earthwork enclosure. The date or precise nature of the enclosure is unknown, but it is likely to be later prehistoric (c. 800 BC – AD 74). It is located to the west of the Nant y Crimp stream and is bisected by a modern trackway. Oval in shape, it measures 90m north-south by 85m east-west. It is defined by a wide earthen bank, much spread, measuring 12m to 17m in width and 0.50m in height, reaching nearly 1m tall in places. A gap, 7m wide in the northern side of the enclosure, may represent an original entrance.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of later prehistoric defensive organisation and settlement. The site forms an important element within the wider later prehistoric context and within the surrounding landscape. The site is well preserved and retains considerable archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of evidence relating to chronology, building techniques, occupation and functional detail.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is sub-circular in shape, centred on OS NGR 263622 201560 and measures 106m north-south by 100m east-west. Originally designated in 1967, the scheduled area has been positively revised to include additional outer defensive earthworks identified through LiDAR data. The modern trackway is excluded from the scheduled area.
