Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The monument comprises the remains of a church probably dating to the medieval period. The church, on Penmaen Burrows, was probably besanded before AD 1320. It was excavated in 1861 by Moggridge and Eaton, revealing a stone altar, a well-preserved piscina and four graves set in the floor. Over the solid stone altar had been a single-light window, while in the north wall of the chancel, near the east end, was a similar window. Finds included fragments of early painted glass, a stone muller and flat grinding stone with red pigment, and early English jug and a 12th or 13th century thurible.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of medieval ecclesiastical organisation. The monument forms an important element within the wider medieval context and the structure itself may be expected to contain archaeological information in regard to chronology, building techniques and functional detail.
