Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description for the scheduled monument.

The monument consists of the remains of an engine house, dating to the 19th century. It comprises the remains of a Cornish-type engine house with a stone stack with a brick top. There are two shafts nearby. The chimney demolished in 1985. The engine house was originally of three storeys with walls up to 1.33m thick. A tall opening in the south wall immediately adjacent to and above the engine shaft probably housed the winding gear. A brick arched entrance doorway is centrally placed in the north wall with two windows above. Within the building the stone foundations for the engines are visible.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of mining in Wales. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structure itself may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques. An engine house may be part of a larger cluster of industrial monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
