Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of a burial cairn, with a kerb of edge-set stones defining the edge, which probably dates to the Bronze Age (c.2300 BC - 800 BC) and is located on the west facing slope of Cefn Penagored ridge. The cairn measures 6m in diameter and is defined by a prominent ring of large stones, some over 1m in length. A further cairn is located downslope and measures 6m in diameter and is defined by an earth and stone bank, which includs a large quantity of white quartz. There is a small stone lined cist at its centre.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. The monument is an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of both structural evidence and intact burial or ritual deposits. Kerb cairns may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is a recatngle and measures 50m x 30m.
