Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the scheduled monument.
The monument consists of a stone, which possibly functioned as a market or civic stone, or a preaching stone. It takes the form of a rough limestone block, 1.2m by 0.6m by 0.6m, (formerly) set behind railings outside Barclays Bank on the west side of St Peter's Square, recorded as being set in the middle of the street in 1699. A tablet reads "Maen Huail. On which tradition states, King Arthur beheaded Huail, brother of Gildas the historian."
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of medieval society. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. A stone may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
