Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The monument comprises the remains of a compact farmstead settlement of at least six hut circles. The monument probably dates to the Iron Age or Romano-British period (c. 800 BC - AD 400). The remains are low but clearly visible and the huts vary in size with one particularly large example measuring 10m across. Associated stony banks, possibly defining small paddocks can also be identified.

The site is a rare survival in a lowland area where early settlements have often been removed by agricultural, commercial and domestic development. In spite of these dangers this monument has survived in good condition and is still relatively complete. It retains significant archaeological potential and there is a strong probability that structural evidence has survived, together with internal and external floor surfaces and other archaeological deposits. It is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of later prehistoric domestic construction practices.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
