Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.

The remains of a prehistoric enclosed hut group standing on a level terrace on a W-facing hillslope. The enclosure is nearly circular in shape, with a diameter of 36 m. There is a substantial enclosure wall c. 2.25 m wide and 0.75 m high, of large facing stones with a rubble core. The remains of one oval hut 13 m by 7.5 m lie in the SW corner of the enclosure. Another bank runs off NE from the corner of the hut.

The site is crossed from W to E by a line of large stones, presumably the remains of a field boundary, probably of fairly recent origin. The site is also cut by a modern field bank running N - S, resulting in a small part of the site on the E being isolated from the main part.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric settlement. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structures themselves may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
