Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.

A defended settlement, situated on the top of a rounded hill. The sides of the hill fall away steeply on all sides but the NE. The remains are visible as very low grass-covered stone banks, generally less than 0.3m high, with occasional orthostats. The site has been heavily robbed of stone in the past, obscuring much of the detail. There is a central enclosure, 36m in diameter, containing the remains of at least three round huts. There are remains of a single rampart N of this enclosure, and of two ramparts to the S. Nine or more huts lie scattered between the ramparts. The outer banks do not fully enclose the site, and the easiest approach appears to be left open. Further excavation may explain more fully the line of the outer banks. There are a series of quarry scoops on the SW side of the site, and a rock-cut pit on the NE side. Terraced fields, more round huts, and a single long hut lie to the NE, outside the scheduled area.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric settlement and defence. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structures themselves may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
