Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument consists of the remains of five canal boats, shoring up the harbour break water. They are in varying states of completeness, but are all constructed of wrought iron plates bolted together. Three have pointed ends and one is a tub boat with lightly rounded ends. All have a variety of fixings for towing and holding down tarpaulins.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of maritime transport. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is a a strip approximately 80m by 12m just below high tide mark at the base of the harbour breakwater.
