Cadw's description

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The monument comprises the remains of a pair of stone built cairns which probably date to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 - 800 BC) and which are situated on a the summit of Garreg Las above Twyn Swnd. The northern cairn is circular in plan and measures 15m in diameter and up to c 2m high. It is flat-topped and has a central depression measuring approximately 6m by 5m by 1m in depth. The southern cairn lies 30m to the south of the first, is circular in plan and measures 15m in diameter and up to 2.3mhigh having a circular depression in the centre approximately 6m in diameter and 1m in depth.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. The features are an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retain significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of both intact ritual and burial deposits, together with environmental and structural evidence. The cairns are the easternmost in a line extending along the summits of Mynydd Ddu and their importance is further enhanced by their group value.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
