Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of a burial cairn, probably dating to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 - 800 BC). It is located in open moorland amongst shakeholes on a terrace on the lower NW-facing slopes of Bwlch y Ddeuwynt. The cairn overlooks the upper course of the Afon Twrch to the W. The turf-covered, stone-built cairn is roughly circular in shape on plan and measures c. 8m in diameter and up to 1m in height. The cairn appears to be undisturbed.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. The monument is an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of both intact burial or ritual deposits, together with environmental and structural evidence. The importance of the site is further enhanced by its association with several other Bronze Age burial cairns located to the E.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. The scheduled area is circular and measures 22m in diameter.
