Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of a prehistoric cairn circle, probably dating to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 - 800 BC). The cairn is circular on plan and forms a platform that measures 15m in diameter and 0.8m high from the bank of which protrude a ring of stones about 0.5m high of which 9 of an unknown number remain.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. In particular, it has group value as it is one of a number of other associated monuments in the immediate vicinity that form the Glandy Cross Complex and forms an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape which retains significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of both intact ritual and burial deposits, together with environmental and structural evidence.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
