Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of two standing stones, which date to the Early Bronze Age (c. 2200 - 1500 BC). The northern stone measures 2.8m high, 0.6m wide x 0.3m deep and is roughly rectangular in cross section rising to a pointed tip, the southern stone measures 2.3m high, 1m wide x 0.7m deep and is flat topped with an irregular diamond shape in cross section. Excavation during 1991-1992 revealed a quartz cobbled surface, pits and postholes interpreted as wooden screening.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. It is an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retains significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of intact burial or ritual deposits, together with environmental and structural evidence. The standing stones form part of the Glandy Cross monumental complex of ring cairns, round barrows and standing stones and their importance is further enhanced by their group value.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
