Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of a prehistoric cairn cemetery, probably dating to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 - 800 BC). The cemetery contains the remains of three round cairns, located in open moorland on the summit of Garn Gron. The westernmost cairn (Item 'A') is circular on plan and measures c. 15m in diameter and a maximum of 1.3m in height. A central hollow may indicate antiquarian investigation or robbing. The middle cairn (Item 'B') is located c. 200m to the SE of Item 'A'. It is circular on plan and measures c. 18m in diameter and a maximum of 1.5m in height. Stones set vertically in the ground around the edge of the cairn indicate a possible kerb. The easternmost cairn (Item 'C') is located c. 25m to the NE of Item 'B'. It is circular on plan and measures c. 9m in diameter and a maximum of 1.8m in height. All three cairns have been disturbed and their fabric remodelled. Despite this disturbance, the bulk of each cairn remains intact and well defined.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. The features are important relics of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retain significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of both intact burial or ritual deposits, together with environmental and structural evidence. The importance of the monument is further enhanced by the group value formed by the association of the individual cairns within the cemetery and the association of the cemetery with similar cemeteries on the adjacent summits of Banc Mawr and Carn Fflur to the SW and NE respectively.
The scheduled areas comprise the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. Area 'A', centred on Item 'A', is circular and measures 26m in diameter. Area 'B', incorporating Items 'B' and 'C', is rectangular and measures 70m NE-SW by 35m transversely.
