Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
The monument, also known as Groes Fechan, comprises the remains of a large burial cairn, probably dating to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 - 800 BC). It is located in rough pasture on the top of a W-facing spur on the W side of Garn Gron mountain. The stone-built cairn is circular in shape on plan and measures c. 17m in diameter and a maximum of 1.2m in height. Although there are signs of disturbance - the central cairn material has been removed in the past to reveal the remains of a cist - it appears substantially intact. The cist is aligned N-S and measures c. 1.1m in length, 0.5m in width and 0.3m in depth. There is a vertically set stone slab on the W side of the cist, which measures c. 1m in length and 0.13m in thickness. A modern shelter has been constructed from cairn material on the SE side of the cairn.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. The monument is an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of both intact burial or ritual deposits, together with structural evidence. The cairn is intervisible with three other cairns located c. 750m to the NE.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is circular and measures 30m in diameter.
