Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The monument consists of a bridge, dating to the post-medieval period. Llechryd Bridge, spanning the river Teifi, is stone-built with five main segmental arches crossing the normal channel of the river. In addition, there is a further flood-relief arch at either end; that at the southern end is wide and flat on the east side but emerges as two round-headed arches on the west. The total length of the bridge is c.100m, and it is c.7m wide. It has plain parapets (although these have been much repaired and probably altered from the original design) and triangular cutwaters. The date 1656 is inscribed on a small stone.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of post-medieval construction techniques and transportation systems. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structure itself may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
