Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The monument comprises the remains of a longhut and associated enclosure, which probably dates to the late medieval or post-medieval periods. It is situated within unenclosed moorland on a flat terrace on the S-facing slopes above the Afon Hepste. The longhut is sub-rectangular in shape on plan and measures 12m in length NW-SE by 3.5m transversely. The walls are built from stone rubble and measure a maximum of 1m in height and 1.5m in width. The longhut features an internal partition wall and entrances set into the NW and SE walls. The longhut is attached to a small paddock on the SE side. This is appended to a larger enclosure of sub-rectangular shape, which measures 25m in length (NE-SW) by 19m in width. The enclosure walls measure a maximum of 0.7m in height and 1.2m in thickness and feature facing stone in places.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of medieval and post-medieval land use, settlement and economy. It is well preserved and retains significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of evidence relating to chronology, layout, building techniques and functional detail. The importance of the site is further enhanced by its association with a similar monument nearby (BR409).

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is circular in shape and measures 45m in diameter. It is centred on NGR SN 95990 13260.
