Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The monument comprises the remains of a large ring cairn, which probably dates to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 - 800 BC). It is located to the S of a local summit on a gentle S-facing slope in upland moorland used for grazing. The cairn is circular in shape on plan and measures 18m in diameter. It comprises an external bank, 4.5m wide and a maximum of 1.2m in height, with a central flat based depression around 9m in diameter. On the S side is a raised area which may be the spoil from a past investigation, and externally there is a roughly semi-circular platform protruding from the base of the ring cairn.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. The monument is an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retains significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of both structural and environmental evidence, together with intact burial or ritual deposits. The importance of the cairn is further enhanced by the group value it shares with other scheduled cairns located to the WNW (BR203, BR204 and BR205).

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is circular in shape on plan and measures 30m in diameter.
