Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The monument comprises the remains of an earthwork enclosure. The date or precise nature of the enclosure is unknown, but it is likely to be medieval or post-medieval. It is roughly circular, measuring 28m in diameter and comprises a bank and external ditch encircling a roughly level interior which has been sub-divided by an internal circular bank and ditch on the northern side. This internal enclosure measures 13m in diameter and has a possible entrance on the SW side. There are gaps in the outer bank and ditch at the point where they join the inner bank and ditch and it is possible that the inner enclosure was built first, with the outer bank and ditch subsequently built to extend the enclosure. The enclosure is reminiscent of a small ring work and bailey, and may be medieval, however its small size and non-defensive position suggests that it is more likely to be an embanked farmstead.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of medieval or post-medieval defensive organisation and settlement. The site forms an important element within the wider medieval context and within the surrounding landscape. The site is well preserved and retains considerable archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of evidence relating to chronology, building techniques and functional detail.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
