Location

Located to the rear (W) of Nantclwyd House.

History

Walls of C15 or earlier, marking out the medieval double burgage plot to the rear of Nantclwyd House. Maps going back to 1780 show a narrow range against the S wall, adjacent to Nantclwyd House, probably explaining the height of the wall in this location.

Exterior

Rubble stone wall of varying height. On the S side, the wall is up to 4m high adjacent to the house (temporarily reduced at time of survey). Its external side, facing into the courtyard of Bron y gaer, has a former doorway infilled with brick. To the R, the wall steps back, with an infilled lean-to in the angle; it continues at c2.5m height, with flat stone coping and coped offset, stepping down towards the W. In the SW angle is a C20 stone garden feature. Along the W side, the wall is stepped down and broken towards the centre, to form access to the former Lord's garden. In the NW angle, the W and N walls join the gazebo. The N wall of the garden is c2m high with concrete coping, with an entrance to the R, and further entrance cut in to far R, adjacent to the house.

Reason for designation

Listed for their special interest as garden walls marking out the medieval burgage plot of Nantclwyd house, some sections probably original, the rest rebuilt or altered later. Group value with Nantclwyd House.
