Location

Located on elevated ground on the minor road from Talgarth to Llanfihangel Tal-y-llyn on the left bank of the Afon Llynfi.

History

Gentry house of the late C17, extended in the early C18 and undergoing restoration at the time of inspection (March 1995).

Exterior

Sandstone rubble, with hipped Herefordshire stone tiled roof, renewed 1995. Two storeys. The original house consists of a 3-bay E-W range, with central hall with lateral stack, probably with a partitioned off inner room, later a dairy, at the W end, and a wider parlour, also with a lateral stack, beyond the cross passage, at the E end. The rear door of the cross passage later incorporated into a rear kitchen extension, with a separate service room. A gabled stair tower has been added to the rear of the inner room.

Main N elevation has 5 window bays, with 6-panelled door to the cross passage. Regularly placed windows, 3 windows on 2 storeys to right of door, and one to the parlour to the left, being replaced by hardwood transomed cross windows 1995. E elevation similar, with 3 windows to the parlour, and similar windows to the kitchen beyond the straight joint. External gable stack. Elevation has 3 window bays on two storeys regularly placed to right of entrance, and one bay to left, all softwood windows undergoing replacement 1995. Parlour stack has 2 diagonal flues (rebuilt).

Interior

Hall has flush lateral fireplace, later reduced in width, and blocked oven to right. Three transverse beams and plaster ceiling. Rear stair blocked off and replaced by C19 stair. Parlour has small fireplace with oak lintel, and 2 chamfered cross beams. Plaster cavetto moulded cornice partially survives. Kitchen has large gable fireplace, also reduced in width, and an inserted side oven. Four chamfered cross beams.

Reason for designation

Included as an important gentry house, of the C17 and C18.
