Location

On the S side of the road opposite the entrance to Pembroke Castle.

History

Terraced house, C18 altered in late C19, converted to flats in late C20. The angle pilasters are similar to those on Nos 1 and 2, and apparently date from c1900 as not shown in an 1893 view of No 1. The house is said to have had a medieval pointed vault some 30 feet (9 metres) back from the street front, but although mentioned in 1981 listing it was not seen then, nor in 2004 when the interior was not accessible. The vault is said to have been tall and pointed.

Exterior

Terraced house, painted stucco with slate roof continuous from No 2 to left and small stuccoed right end stack. Three storeys and cellar, two bays with raised plinth, raised angle pilasters, two sill courses broken forward over pilasters, moulded pilaster caps with moulded course below frieze, moulded architraves and renewed timber eaves with small brackets. Four-pane sash windows and doorway in right hand bay with C19 timber doorcase of panelled pilasters, entablature with modillion cornice (cornice broken off in 2004). Panelled reveals, six-panel door with the top four panels raised and fielded. Plain overlight . Sashes in right bay are narrower than those to left.
Lower narrow rear wing of two storeys and attic, formerly with gabled dormer with horizontally sliding casement. Altered in late C20, now with big arched window to gable end attic, two first floor sashes and ground floor glazed doors.

Interior

Interior not inspected in 1981 or 2004. Said to have early vaulted chamber in use as kitchen circa 30 feet to rear of street front. The front room said to have had C18 cupboards with fielded panels to doors with rounded tops. C19 stairs.

Reason for designation

Included for its special architectural interest as a substantial terraced house with possibly medieval rear vaulted chamber.
