Location

Located on the NW side of the A4080 - Brynsiencyn Road, opposite the Grand Lodge to Plas Newydd.

History

Probably built mid C19; the house does not appear on the Tithe map for Llanedwen in 1844 but a house is mentioned in the census returns for the parish in 1851. Originally built as a two storey farm cottage, with brewhouse to right and pigsty to rear. Extended and remodelled in picturesque style during improvements made to the Plas Newydd Estate properties during the mid C19, when the wing was added to the left (SW) end, with entrance porch and flanking circular bays. The casement windows and octagonal stacks are characteristic of this C19 remodelling work carried out by the estate. The house was formerly occupied by the head forester of the Plas Newydd estate, and the garden was raised by the addition of imported soils and used as the nursery for the woodland surrounding Plas Newydd.

Exterior

Original range comprises 2-storey cottage with single storeyed, hipped roofed wing to right (the former brewhouse) and lean-to extension to rear with catslide roof over single unit pigsty. A symmetrically planned picturesque wing was added against the left hand gable and comprises small single-storey 'cottage' flanked by 2 circular blocks. Rubble walls, now rendered; slate roof and octagonal stone stacks. Main part with entrance through 4-centred voussoir arch in lean-to porch to left, in angle with advanced circular bay; to right, lower storey 12-pane sash window, upper storey 2-light, mullioned and transomed window with small panes. Paired octagonal stone stacks to right end (with stone fence post as finial to left). Bay to right with single octagonal stone stack at each corner, elliptical arch over modern window in right end. 'Cottage' wing to left symmetrically planned; central porch with 4-centred voussoir arched entrance, flanked by elliptical arched recesses each with 2 light, 8-pane side hung casements, single stack to right. Wing has circular bays either end with projecting chimney breasts and single
2- light, 8- pane casement windows.

Interior

Sitting room contains a marble fireplace, locally reputed to have come from Plas Newydd.

Reason for designation

Listed as a good example of C19 domestic estate architecture, involving the re-modelling and picturesque enhancement of an earlier house, which is part of a group of estate buildings just outside the walls to Plas Newydd House, at the entrance to Grand Drive.
