Location

Prominently-sited in the village centre, set back slightly from the main street behind pebbled-dashed and hedged forecourt walls.

History

Regency villa built c1830 as part of a speculative development of the village on this side of the river by the Sygun estate on its Perthi Farm property. This development, to which the earliest of the C19 buildings in the village belong, was intended to serve the increasing numbers of tourists who were coming to Snowdonia in the second quarter of the century.

Exterior

Two-storey, 3-bay Regency villa, with storeyed lean-to pavilion wings recessed to the sides. Of coursed, rough-dressed stone blocks (originally stuccoed) under a shallow-pitched, hipped roof of graded slates; deep bracketted eaves and plain end chimneys with weather coursing. Symmetrical facade with central entrance to raised ground floor, via 8 slate steps; modern 6-panel door (upper 4 glazed), with rectangular fanlight with decorative intersecting glazing bars. The original 12-pane unhorned sashes survive to both floors, all with projecting slate sills; those to the first floor are slightly smaller and are tucked under the eaves. Narrow, horizontal basement lights flank the entrance, with modern glazing. The flanking pavilion wings are of 2 low storeys with lean-to slate roofs. That to the R has a modern part-glazed entrance with an original 16-pane sash above; that to the L has a similar sash to the ground floor and a fixed (later) 8-pane window above. This side has a modern window under the eaves on its L return, and has a small single-storey lean-to addition extruded in the rear angle between it and the main block.

Interior

The interior was not inspected at the time of survey.

Reason for designation

Listed for its special interest as a well-preserved Regency villa within a good village streetscape.
