Cadw's description
Location
In a row of frontages near the N end of the street.
History
Built in the third quarter of the C19, on the site of the former Plas Puleston. Plas Puleston was one of several plasau or town houses, built by leading gentry families from the late C16. Plas Puleston, the home of the Puleston family, had become an alehouse (The Old Red Lion) by the early C19. Although the building was demolished when Nos 4 and 4a Palace Street were built, the boundary wall to the rear yard almost certainly survives from the previous building - perhaps as a loggia, or vaulted stores. There is no direct dating evidence for this wall, which is unlikely to be contemporary with the original Plas Puleston, but may have been built in the late C18.
Reason for designation
Listed as a well-detailed later C19 commercial building in the eclectic classical style prevalent in Victorian Caernarfon, retaining original character and detail, including a good shop front, and for its contribution to the historic integrity of the walled town. Remains of an earlier structure in the rear yard are also of special interest.
