Cadw's description
Location
About 900m NNW of Ciliau, on higher ground.
History
Probably late C17/early C18, but awkward join between blocks suggests 2 phases. According to a local tradition the barn may have been moved to this site in mid C19 when the railway was built along the River Wye.
Exterior
Barn aligned roughly E-W with cowhouse range at right angles to E, on S side. Barn is timber-framed, front and rear, partially clad in corrugated sheeting, with end walls in stone. Large opposed threshing doorways. Roof partially original stone slates, partially corrugated sheeting. Cowhouse range mainly stone with open front with jowelled posts. Roof and front covered in corrugated sheeting. Three bays face yard (further bay at N end incorporates junction with barn) central paired doors, wooden gates to outer bays.
Interior
Barn of 5 bays; roof trusses with tie-beams and raking struts. Threshing floor flanked by dwarf stone walls; posts and raking struts to cross-framing. Cowhouse has roof trusses with cambered tie-beams and raking struts, with complex (C19) diagonal truss at turn where range meets barn. Jowelled posts to front facing yard. Wooden feeding troughs and hay rack intact.
Reason for designation
An early agricultural range connected with Grade II* listed Ciliau.
