Location

Situated facing W on the junction of minor roads 1km W of Llanfihangel-y-Creuddyn.

History

Calvinistic Methodist chapel dated 1823, more probably rebuilt c1860, apparently with the inside arrangement facing an end wall pulpit, and therefore with only one door in the long wall, an unusual arrangement reflecting the transitional period between long-wall and gable-entry chapels.

Exterior

Chapel, painted stucco and slate roof. Long-wall facade of square-headed openings, 2 centre long 15-pane sashes with plaque between: 'Capel Cynnon a adeiladwyd yn y flwyddyn 1823', two outer long narrow 8-pane gallery lights, and single boarded door to right, under gallery window. Rubble stone rear with 3 large 12-pane sashes with brick cambered heads.
Lower vestry to right with brick end stack, 2 large 4-pane sashes to upper floor, door and small 4-pane casement below. Angle quoins. Rubble end wall with small 4-pane window to first floor right and ground floor left, both in red brick surrounds, door with brick head to right. Evidence that an older structure has been raised. Rear has rubble basement, rest red brick with 2 first floor 4-pane sashes.

Interior

Simple interior without galleries, plastered with pulpit on left end wall. Painted grained box pews in 3 blocks, some inward-facing each side of pulpit. Large panels, panelled dado, all painted a pale colour. Matching 'set fawr' with curved angles. Two brass oil lamps on standards. Small pulpit grained a darker brown than pews and seat, with single set of steps up from left and pierced flat balusters, chamfered newel and ball finial with spike. Pulpit has panelled sides with canted angles. Behind, a large pilastered arch, flanked by 2 oil lamps on brackets. Later timber lobby in corner with half-glazed doors and one half-glazed side. C20 flat ceiling.

Reason for designation

Included as a substantial rural chapel with long-wall facade with unusual plan form and painted grained box pews.
