Location

Prominently sited approximately 1.8km SE of Tretower church on NE side of junction of A40 and A479.

History

C17 farm house later extended and to which cider mill was subsequently added. Acquired by the Glanusk Estate mid C19. Now a public house.

Exterior

Two-storey main range with lower one-and-a-half-storey mill wing forward on L, forming an L-plan. The main range is 3 units with the original house to R. Of whitewashed rubble stone and stone tile roof. The main range has 3 C19 dressed stone ridge stacks. Two-window front. In the upper storey is an inserted casement to R under the wall plate, and 4-light casement to L in widened opening. The lower storey has inserted casements R and L of doorway, which has a boarded door inside an added gabled, timber-framed porch. (Added lean-to to R gable end.)

The mill has an outshut to front centre with double boarded cart doors and fleur-de-lys strap hinges. A one-and-a-half storey cross gable to R has a 2-light casement in the attic and stone steps on R side to former loft doorway. Further R, in the angle with the main range, is a shallow outshut with inserted casement. In the L gable end is an loft casement window in earlier opening. To the rear is a casement window R of centre and boarded door L of centre. Two added skylights to rear roof slope.

Interior

The main house has a large fireplace with timber lintel, and remains of a fireplace stair beside it (now cut through to toilets). Otherwise the interior is modernised. The former mill, now a restaurant, has a large cider press in the centre of the room.

Reason for designation

A prominently sited building with traditional stone tile roofs, and of additional special interest as a former estate cider mill, a feature once common in the area.
