Crickie (also known as Crugiau) farmhouse including in-line farm range

Location

In an isolated position NNE of Llangorse on land sloping down to Nant Cwy and reached by a long farm track.

History

Probably late C17 house with end wing added 1858, attached byre/stable range possibly contemporary with separately listed barn dated 1740 at right angles with attached granary of 1857. The mid C19 improvements, including the new cow byre of 1856, were carried out by the Powell family who are buried in Llangors churchyard. Crickie is a long used anglicisation of Crugiau and both are employed interchangably on maps and monuments.

Exterior

Three units: at centre of range is the early 3 bay house of single storey and attic, single depths rooms; to left a 2 storey extension to house; to right a two bay byre and hayloft range. Crossing at right angles is a large barn range separately listed with to right an attached granary and stable. House of stone rubble with Welsh slate roof and end and ridge brick stacks; some dressed stone to later wing; farm buildings partly limewashed, mostly corrugated roofs though a small area of Welsh slate adjacent to house. Older house of one storey and attic has 3 gabled roof dormers and windows below under stone hoods with timber lintels, all renewed casements; doorway with hipped hood and door of wide boards. 2 storey extension left has shallower roof pitch and 8/8 pane sashes with slender glazing bars under dressed stone lintels on each floor. To rear former cider cellar and room has been converted to additional living accommodation. Adjoining older unit to right with a slightly different roof pitch is the 2 bay byre range; to left doorway under shallow timber lintel, small window to right with thick wooden frame and 2 slender mullions and pitching door to loft above; the end bay is open at first floor level where barn adjoins with ground floor doorway; to rear a doorway and large blocked doorway with timber lintel; ventilation slit. The house is bordered by a low stone wall with metal railings and gates forming a small courtyard separate from the main farmyard.

Interior

Older house unit retains original plan of parlour left and kitchen to right, with intervening staircase hallway with dairy to rear. The steep wooden staircase ascends from hallway front left; lintel to remodelled fireplace in room left, chamfered and stopped cross beams,some old planked doors; fireplace in kitchen right retains bread oven. Byre has pegged A frame trusses and staggered trenched purlins.

Reason for designation

Listed as an important local farmhouse with C17 origins.
