Location

On a side road up to Bwlch Trewyn about 1km north of Llanvihangel Crucorney village.

History

Large combination barn dating probably from the end of the C17 or the beginning of the C18.

Exterior

Grey sandstone rubble with corrugated metal sheeting roof.
Road elevation has the barn at the downhill end on the left. Central opposed cart doors to the barn with small porch, two vertical slit vents on either side, small cowhouse door under the lower end. To the right a good outside staircase goes up to the granary which has a taking-in door under a projecting gabled porch over an open cart shed, and the door off the stairs in one side. The end bay has another open cart shed with taking-in door over.
Gable end has three doors for the cows and the central feeding passage, but one is blocked. Two tiers of slit vents above for the hay tallet.
Rear elevation has a modern projecting extension in front of the higher end. The barn rear is the same as the front but the porch still has a stone tile roof.

Interior

Seven bay structure in two parts, five bay threshing barn with cowhouse under the lower end, two bay granary. Four principal rafter trusses with collars and ties in the barn, stone dividing wall, another truss in the granary. Raking struts, four tiers of trenched purlins, ridge piece, secondary rafters and battens all complete, only the covering is changed. The lower cowhouse has heavy roof beams, manger etc, The granary floor is over two cart sheds.

Reason for designation

Included as a fine example of an all stone built combination barn dating probably from about 1700.
