Location

Situated on the S side of Springfield Lane near the NW edge of the village.

History

Probably built 1836-7 at the time of the construction of Roft Castle House for John Boydell, steward of the Trevalyn Estate, incorporating or reusing materials from an earlier stone building. Converted for residential use, late C20.

Exterior

2-storey stable block built in the picturesque style of Trevalyn estate buildings in the village. Roughly squared and coursed rubble ground floor and red brick above; slate roof, brick chimneys. There is a bracketted eaves cornice throughout. Near symmetrical elevation to Springfield Lane with attached lower range to left. All openings are blind or blocked. Central slightly projecting bay is raised and has an arched door opening with triangular brick pediment and label, upper level has bullseye flanked by mock arrow slits. Flanking bays have bullseyes and arrow slits in the upper floor and openings with brick ogee heads to the ground floor. Attached range to left has a pair of circular openings with a mock arrow slit between them in the upper floor. Return elevations have bracketted cornices which return for a short distance at eaves level. Side and rear openings relate to late C20 conversion. To the rear a yard area with stone walls and mock arrow slits is set into the hillside.

Reason for designation

Listed as a C19 former stable block which incorporates elements of the picturesque style of Trevalyn Estate buildings of the village, and for historical associations with Roft Castle House.
