Location

Located on the N side of a minor road running NW from Henllan to Llannefydd, approximately 1.5km from the former; accessed from the road via a farm track.

History

Llechryd is mentioned in de Beckeke's survey of Denbigh in 1334 and is traditionally taken to be the birthplace of Iolo Goch (c1320-c1398), the great medieval Welsh poet. This house is close to the earlier dwelling which remains but is now used as a barn. A C17 lobby-entry house, it was mentioned in 1656, but a date of 1703 on a door (now removed) is suggestive of remodelling; the house was subsequently raised and extended to the rear. Until 1876 Llechryd was the seat of the Ffoulkes family.

Exterior

Storeyed farmhouse of whitened rubble construction with a slate roof and tiled ridge; central and end chimney (the latter to the R gable), both rebuilt in brick. Three-bay front with near-central entrance and modern boarded door to reduced opening. This is flanked by 6-pane modern windows; further modern casements to the first floor and to the R gable. Modern storeyed and lower additions to the rear.

Interior

Lobby-entry plan with stopped-chamfered main beam and plain joists to former hall (L); the beams to the corresponding parlour space are implied but hidden beneath plaster. Stopped-chamfered, cambered fireplace bressummer to the hall, with a built-in late C18 or early C19 settle projecting forwards to the R. To the L of the fireplace is a small wall cupboard with raised and fielded panelled door.

Reason for designation

Listed for its special historic interest as a C17/C18 regional house and its site which has historic associations with the famous C14 poet Iolo Goch.
